How day trips from Hue work

Hue sits in a useful position for day trips. The city is compact enough that you can be out of town within 20 minutes, and the surrounding area packs in imperial history, mountain terrain, coastal lagoons, and war history within a roughly 100 km radius.

Most visitors spend two or three nights in Hue and use one or two days for excursions. The five options below cover different interests and different distances. None of them require an overnight stay, though Bach Ma comes close if you want to hike seriously.

Transport options are straightforward. You can hire a motorbike driver for the day (agree the route and price in advance), join a shared minibus tour through your hotel or a local agency, or hire a private car if you are travelling as a group or want flexibility. Solo motorbike rental is possible if you are an experienced rider and know that mountain roads in this area can be slippery in wet weather.

The Royal Tombs Perfume River loop

The tombs of the Nguyen emperors are the most popular day trip from Hue, and the most logical one given that they sit between 7 km and 16 km south of the city centre along the Perfume River.

The main tombs visitors go to are Minh Mang, Tu Duc, and Khai Dinh. Each is architecturally distinct. Minh Mang is formal and symmetrical, set around a series of lakes. Tu Duc is quieter and feels more like a garden retreat. Khai Dinh is later in date and mixes European and Vietnamese styles in a way that divides opinion.

A boat trip on the Perfume River is the traditional way to reach the tombs, though some boats only drop you at one site. Confirm the itinerary before you pay. Entrance to each tomb costs around 150,000 to 200,000 VND in 2026. A full loop covering three tombs, including transport, typically runs 400,000 to 700,000 VND per person on a shared tour.

You can combine this with a stop at Thien Mu Pagoda, which is close to the river and takes 30 minutes to see properly.

DMZ and Khe Sanh

The DMZ and war sites day trip takes you north from Hue toward the former Demilitarized Zone and the sites associated with the American and Vietnam wars. The drive is roughly 70 to 100 km depending on which sites you include.

Key stops on most itineraries include the Vinh Moc tunnels, the Ben Hai River crossing, the Truong Son National Cemetery, and Khe Sanh Combat Base. The tunnels at Vinh Moc are in better condition than those at Cu Chi and genuinely worth the visit. Khe Sanh has a small museum with aircraft and ordnance on display.

This is a long day. Most tours leave Hue by 7 or 8 in the morning and return by early evening. Expect 500,000 to 800,000 VND per person on a shared minibus, or more for a private car. Hiring a knowledgeable guide makes a difference here because the historical context is not self-explanatory from signs alone.

Bach Ma National Park

Bach Ma is a forested mountain park about 45 km southeast of Hue. The summit sits at around 1,450 metres and catches cloud cover for much of the year, which is why French colonial-era villas were built here as a hill station.

The main draw for day visitors is the hike to Do Quyen waterfall and, if conditions allow, the summit trail with views over the coast and lagoon. The park has clear trail markers and the hike to the waterfall takes about two to three hours return. The summit road is accessible by vehicle.

Entrance is around 60,000 VND. Getting there independently requires a motorbike or hired car; there is no regular public transport to the park gate. Allow a full day and check weather forecasts before going, as the summit is genuinely cold and wet outside of dry season.

Lang Co lagoon and beach

Lang Co is a narrow peninsula about 60 km south of Hue, separated from the mainland by a lagoon and facing the South China Sea on the other side. It takes around 90 minutes to reach by road.

The beach is long and relatively quiet compared to Da Nang. The lagoon side has a fishing village atmosphere. Most visitors come to swim, eat seafood, and not do very much. There is no major attraction in the conventional sense. That is the point.

Lang Co works well as a half-day or leisurely full day. It pairs naturally with the Hai Van Pass route described below.

Hai Van Pass to Da Nang as a one-way

The Hai Van Pass (Pass of Ocean Clouds) crosses the ridge between Hue and Da Nang at around 500 metres. The road over the pass is about 21 km and the views back over Lang Co lagoon and forward toward Da Nang Bay are among the most cited in Vietnam.

The practical option for many travellers is to ride or drive over the pass one way and continue into Da Nang rather than doubling back. This works if you are moving between the two cities anyway. If you want to return to Hue the same day, you will spend a lot of time in transit relative to the sightseeing.

Tours covering this route often include Lang Co and a stop at the old French bunkers on the summit. Private car hire for a one-way Hue to Da Nang route with a pass stop runs roughly 800,000 to 1,200,000 VND depending on vehicle size and negotiation.

Pricing reality

Prices below are approximate 2026 figures and will vary by season, group size, and how you book.

  • Shared minibus tour (DMZ or tombs): 400,000 to 800,000 VND per person
  • Private car hire for the day: 1,200,000 to 2,000,000 VND total
  • Motorbike driver hired for the day: 400,000 to 600,000 VND
  • Entrance fees: 60,000 to 200,000 VND per site

Booking through your accommodation is usually fine and avoids the overhead of finding a reputable agency. For the DMZ trip specifically, asking whether the guide speaks clear English and knows the history in depth is worth doing before you commit.
