  The night my sister got married, the real audience wasn’t in the church. It was outside the bedroom.There was a light in my sister’s eyes that day, a joy so pure it was almost visible. From the moment she told us about her engagement into this family, she spoke of anticipation, celebration, flowers, laughter, and future hopes. She had lived with us since she was two, given to our mother on her own wedding day as a companion. So she was literally my mother’s first child. She was devout, kind, gentle. She believed in goodness and in people and she believed in the tradition into which she was marrying, that is her husband’s. She has been told she must be a virgin because of their confirmation night and she was sure she was one. In their culture, a bride’s dignity was not measured by her character, her faith, or her life of service. It was measured by blood and the blood, the family expected to see on a white bedsheet after the wedding night. So, she had waited and anticipated as she thought she had done everything right.
