  We were in need of emergency travel documents, we called the British embassy in London who were in contact with the embassy in Hanoi. We got our emergency documents in two days, the lady was so incredibly helpful and really put us at ease. I don’t know why the reviews are so bad, for us english citizens they were very helpful.

  I can’t thank Mai from the British Consulate in Hanoi enough for her incredible help during a very difficult, illegal and unsafe situation in Hoi An Immigration office, Vietnam. She acted quickly, professionally, and with genuine care, helping me out of danger, arranging my safe travel, and ensuring I could leave the country without further trouble. Her calm, clear guidance and kindness made all the difference. Truly outstanding support and a credit to the Consulate.

  I had my passport stolen from my room and l only found out when l got to airport. The embassy were so kind and moved fast so quickly calmed down as l was out of my mind. They gave me clear instructions and helped when the police in Vietnam refused to give me a police report as they didn’t want to record an incident in their area. I was so scared as without a police report l couldn’t get exit visa to leave this place. They helped so much and wrote a letter and I was able to get one. I am so grateful,

  Affirmation of Marital Status Appointment I hope this helps future applicants I recently travelled from Da Nang to Hanoi on a tight one night schedule to attend my appointment for the affirmation of marital status at the British Embassy. The initial application and online payment process were smooth and straightforward. On the day, the appointment itself was handled efficiently and the embassy staff were courteous and professional throughout. However, I do feel compelled to revise my initial 5 star impression due to one significant oversight. After completing my appointment and while the staff member briefly stepped away to make copies, I was asked to fill out a written feedback form….which I completed positively. It was only after this, as I was about to leave, that I was informed my signed and stamped affirmation document would require legalisation at the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) located across town. This detail was critical, and the timing of its disclosure felt poorly considered. No mention of this when I applied online. I fully understand the embassy has no control over the Vietnamese authorities’ procedures, but a clearer explanation or even a simple guidance sheet outlining the next steps-including how to book an MoFA appointment, processing times, and expectations would have made a huge difference. Instead, I was given a sheet with just the MoFA address and a web address. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to complete the process due to my return flight and have since spent unnecessary time and effort trying to decipher the next steps. The lack of clarity has caused undue stress for something that should have been a straightforward process. For context, legalisation at MoFA is far from straightforward. You join a numbered queue with over 200 other applicants—because MoFA handles document processing for the entire city. Their operating hours are just 3.5 hours per day, with an extended lunch break that shuts things down for a large portion of the day. Same-day processing is highly unlikely unless you arrive very early and are prepared to wait for hours. To be clear, this is not a complaint about embassy staff professionalism, only a strong suggestion that they improve transparency regarding post-appointment requirements before feedback is collected.

  Having read the previous reviews I wasn't surprised the embassy was not prepared to help me. They have set processes in place and are not prepared to try anything outside of these to assist. They did offer to make a copy of my drivers licence and stamp it for a cost of £25, 5 times more than an IDP costs in uk. In addition the men on Reception thought my situation funny and stood laughing. Mr Hong Guong and his colleague were unkind. Fortunately I met an English traveller who advised if I send copies of documents to uk they can issue an IDP to my family on the same day and post it to me abroad.

  Security guard shouted at me and told me to go away because I was too early for an appointment. I had to wait outside the building until my appointment time. What sort of embassy denies access to its citizens like that? Disgraceful.

  Absolutely useless!!!! My girlfriend thought she had lost her bag with her passport in so filed for an emergency document. We later recovered the bag and passport but were aware that since we had applied for the document already, her passport is now invalid. She had a meeting with the embassy to get her emergency document where she was told she may need to get an exit visa to leave Vietnam. We explained that she now has her passport on her so has proof of when she entered the country and the answer we got was “we don’t know so you’ll have to sort it yourselves”. No real attempt was made to help us. We have consequently had to miss transport and accommodation (which cannot be refunded) to try and sort this issue only to find that my girlfriend doesn’t need an exit visa. THIS IS THE EMBASSYS JOB and this is basic information that staff should be expected to know. Due their incompetence we are now having to lose out financially. Not good enough!!!!
