Day trips from Da Nang
The 7 day-trips from Da Nang — Hoi An, Marble Mountains, Ba Na Hills, My Son ruins, Hue via Hai Van Pass, Son Tra peninsula, Cu Lao Cham island.
How day trips from Da Nang work
Da Nang sits in the middle of Vietnam's central coast and makes an unusually practical base. Most of the region's main attractions fall within 30 to 150 kilometres, and the roads are in decent shape. You can reach Hoi An in under an hour, the Marble Mountains in 20 minutes, and Hue in around two hours depending on the route.
Most visitors hire a motorbike, book a private car, or join a group tour. Private car hire for a full day typically runs 800,000 to 1,400,000 VND depending on distance. Group tours are cheaper but lock you into fixed itineraries and shared timing. Grab is reliable for shorter distances like the Marble Mountains or Son Tra.
Plan around the weather. From September to December, heavy rain and occasional typhoons affect the whole region. The dry season runs roughly February to August, with May to August being the hottest months.
Hoi An old town
Hoi An is the most visited day trip from Da Nang, and for good reason. The old town is compact, walkable, and well preserved. The assembly halls, tailor shops, and riverside lanes are genuinely atmospheric, though it gets crowded by mid-morning in high season.
The drive takes 30 to 45 minutes by road, roughly 30 kilometres south. Motorbike rental from Da Nang is common. Grab also runs to Hoi An but surge pricing applies during busy periods. Entrance tickets to the old town attractions are sold in a combined booklet — most travellers spend 120,000 VND for a five-attraction pass.
Go early if you want to avoid the worst crowds. Many travellers arrive by 8am and leave by noon before the tour groups build up.
Marble Mountains
The Marble Mountains are five limestone hills about 9 kilometres south of central Da Nang. Each is named after one of the five elements. The main hill, Thuy Son, has pagodas, cave shrines, and good views over the coast. The climb takes 20 to 30 minutes at a steady pace.
Entrance is 40,000 VND. A cable car up the main hill costs extra. Most visitors combine this with a stop at the nearby marble carving workshops, though purchasing pressure at some shops can be persistent.
This is a half-day trip rather than a full day. It pairs well with a Hoi An visit on the same day if you want to fill the itinerary.
Ba Na Hills
Ba Na Hills is a French-era hilltop resort operated by Sun Group, now dominated by theme park infrastructure including the famous Golden Bridge held up by stone hands. It sits at around 1,400 metres above Da Nang, around 40 kilometres from the city.
The cable car ride alone is impressive. At peak times, queues can be long. Entry plus cable car costs around 750,000 to 900,000 VND per adult as of 2026. The price is high by Vietnamese standards, and the park is unambiguously a commercial attraction rather than a cultural site. That said, the views on clear days are genuinely good, and the cooler temperature at altitude is welcome in summer.
Avoid weekends and Vietnamese public holidays if crowds are a concern.
My Son Cham ruins
My Son is a Hindu temple complex built by the Cham kingdom between the 4th and 14th centuries. It sits in a jungle valley about 70 kilometres southwest of Da Nang, roughly 90 minutes by road. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most significant Cham ruin accessible from the coast.
Several of the towers were damaged during the war and some look heavily restored, but the overall setting is atmospheric. Bring water and sun protection — the valley gets hot. Entry is around 150,000 VND. Most tours include a boat ride on the Thu Bon River, which adds time and cost.
This works best as a dedicated full-day trip rather than combined with other sites.
Hue via Hai Van Pass
Hue is about 100 kilometres north of Da Nang. The drive over Hai Van Pass is the scenic route — a mountain road that crests at around 500 metres with views over the ocean on both sides. It takes roughly two to two and a half hours each way by road.
In Hue, the Imperial Citadel and the royal tombs are the main draws. A full day gives you time to see two or three of the tombs plus the citadel. The road via the pass is most comfortable in a car or on a well-maintained motorbike. Trucks share the road, and the surface is narrower in places.
Budget around 200,000 to 300,000 VND for citadel entry and one or two tomb sites.
Son Tra peninsula and Linh Ung Pagoda
Son Tra is a forested peninsula about 10 kilometres from central Da Nang. The main landmark is Linh Ung Pagoda, home to a 67-metre white Buddha statue visible from much of the bay. The drive up is pleasant and the views over Da Nang and the coastline are among the best near the city.
Entry to the pagoda is free. Dress modestly. The peninsula also has hiking trails and the chance to spot red-shanked douc langurs, a critically endangered primate found in the forest here. This is an easy half-day from Da Nang with no entrance fee and low cost overall.
Cu Lao Cham island
Cu Lao Cham is a small island group about 15 kilometres offshore from Hoi An, reachable by speedboat in around 15 to 20 minutes from Cua Dai pier. The main activities are snorkelling, swimming, and walking. The coral around the island is protected as part of a marine reserve.
The island is best visited between March and August. Outside that window, rough seas often cancel boats. A return speedboat ticket plus basic snorkelling gear costs around 250,000 to 400,000 VND per person depending on the operator. Overnight stays are possible but most visitors come and go in a day.
This trip pairs naturally with a Hoi An visit since the pier is close to the old town.
Pricing reality
Day trips from Da Nang vary widely in cost. Son Tra and the Marble Mountains are cheap — under 100,000 VND in entry fees. Ba Na Hills is the most expensive single attraction in the region. Private car hire adds 800,000 to 1,400,000 VND on top of entry costs. Group tours typically run 300,000 to 700,000 VND per person all-in for the more popular routes.
Budget travellers can cover Hoi An, the Marble Mountains, and Son Tra on around 500,000 to 800,000 VND in a single day if they hire a motorbike and eat locally.
