Day trips from Hanoi
The 8 day-trips that work from Hanoi — Ninh Binh, Halong Bay one-day, Bat Trang, Duong Lam, Perfume Pagoda, Mai Chau, Ba Vi, Sapa overnight.
How day trips from Hanoi work
Hanoi sits in the Red River Delta with decent road and rail links in most directions. Most of the trips below are 90 to 180 minutes each way. That makes them tiring if you push them all into single days, but doable if you leave early and keep the afternoon loose.
A few practical points before you book anything. Organised tours handle transport, a guide and often lunch in one price. They are convenient but slow — groups stop for photos and shopping. Private car hire costs more but runs on your schedule. Motorbike rental suits confident riders on the shorter routes. For Halong Bay and Mai Chau, an overnight is almost always better than a day return, but day options exist if your schedule is tight.
Traffic out of Hanoi on weekends and public holidays is heavy. Budget extra time or leave before 7 am.
Ninh Binh (Tam Coc + Trang An)
Ninh Binh is 90 km south of Hanoi, around two hours by road. It is the most popular day trip from the city for good reason: the limestone karst scenery at Tam Coc and the longer boat circuit at Trang An are genuinely impressive, and Hoa Lu ancient capital adds a historical stop.
Most visitors do a rowing boat on Tam Coc (about 2 hours, rowing done by local women using their feet), then walk or cycle to Bich Dong pagoda. Trang An is slightly further and larger, with more caves. You can do one or the other in a day; doing both is rushed.
Organised day tours from Hanoi run roughly 400,000 to 650,000 VND per person (around $16 to $26) including transport, guide and boat. Private car hire for the day costs in the range of 1,200,000 to 1,800,000 VND depending on vehicle size.
Halong Bay one-day boat
A genuine overnight cruise on Halong Bay is the recommended way to see it. That said, one-day boat trips do exist and they work if you have no other option.
The bay is 170 km from Hanoi, which means roughly 3.5 hours each way by road. A day trip leaves you about 4 to 5 hours on the water. You will see the karst islands and kayak in a cave or two, but you will spend more time in a van than on a boat. Budget tours for a day trip run around $35 to $55 per person. Overnight cruises start around $90 to $130 for a basic two-day option and go up sharply from there.
If you are choosing between a rushed day and no visit at all, the day trip is worth it. If you have flexibility, add a night.
Bat Trang ceramic village
Bat Trang is 13 km southeast of central Hanoi on the Red River. It has been a pottery-making village for several centuries and remains a working craft community as well as a tourist site. You can watch potters at wheels, paint your own piece, and buy finished goods at the market.
Getting there is easy: local bus number 47 runs from Long Bien bus station, or you can take a taxi or ride-hail for a short fare. Most people spend two to three hours here. It suits a morning or afternoon rather than a full day. Expect to pay 30,000 to 50,000 VND if you want to try making something yourself; buying is optional.
Duong Lam ancient village
Duong Lam is about 45 km west of Hanoi in Son Tay district, roughly 90 minutes by road. It is one of the few surviving examples of a traditional Vietnamese village with old laterite-stone houses. The lanes are quiet, the architecture is genuinely old, and it is much less visited than Ninh Binh.
Entry fee is around 20,000 VND. You can hire a local guide inside the village for a small additional cost. A motorbike trip from Hanoi is popular among people who are comfortable riding. Alternatively, local buses go to Son Tay and a short taxi covers the last stretch. Half a day is enough.
Perfume Pagoda
The Perfume Pagoda complex is about 60 km southwest of Hanoi. It is a large Buddhist site built into limestone cliffs along a river. Getting there involves a 30-minute boat ride through the valley and then a climb up to the main cave-pagoda — either on foot (around 2 hours up) or by cable car.
It is busiest during the Perfume Pagoda Festival from roughly January to March. Outside that period it is quieter. Organised day tours cost around 450,000 to 700,000 VND including transport, boat and cable car. The cave itself is atmospheric but the site is heavily commercialised at the base.
Mai Chau valley
Mai Chau is a broad, flat valley about 135 km southwest of Hanoi, around 3 to 3.5 hours by road. It is home to White Thai ethnic communities and offers rice-field scenery, cycling on flat tracks, and homestay culture.
A single-day visit is possible but leaves little time once travel is accounted for. Most people who enjoy it stay one or two nights in a stilthouse homestay. Homestay accommodation with meals included typically runs 200,000 to 400,000 VND per person per night. Organised tours from Hanoi for the day cost around $25 to $40.
Ba Vi National Park
Ba Vi is about 65 km west of Hanoi and reachable in 1.5 to 2 hours. The park covers a forested mountain range with hiking trails, waterfalls and old French colonial ruins near the summit. It is popular with Hanoians on weekends for the cooler air.
Entry is around 60,000 VND. A cable car runs to the upper area. The roads inside the park are long, so having your own vehicle or hiring a motorbike makes navigation easier. A half-day or full day both work depending on how much hiking you want.
Sapa as 2-day add-on
Sapa is 320 km northwest of Hanoi, around 5 to 6 hours by road or overnight by train. It is not a realistic single-day trip. The standard approach is an overnight sleeper train, one full day in Sapa for trekking or village walks, and then the return train the following night.
Two days and two nights is better. Train tickets on the tourist sleeper services cost around 300,000 to 500,000 VND each way. Budget guesthouses in Sapa start around 200,000 to 400,000 VND per night.
